Create a Local Cube from a Remote Cube using IDS

This exercise will outline the steps on how to create a local cube by copying a cube that resides in a remote database that is opened in a PowerOLAP® server.

To create a Local cube from a remote cube via IDS:

1.   Open a local database (UsingPO.olp) in your local machine.

2.   From the PowerOLAP ribbon, go to Data tab, then in the Data Transfer control group select Internet Data Services command.

Notes

Internet Data Services or IDS are saved as Tasks within the current database)

Clicking Internet Data Services will show the Internet Data Services dialog box (shown below).

A brief description of the available buttons in the Internet Data Services dialog box follows:

3.   Click on the Create button and you get a configuration screen.

Define the configuration screen as follows:

4.   Name the new Cube (e.g., Canada Exchange Rate Update).

5.   Specify the name of the server you want to access.
Specify whether this has a secure connection. If you are trying to access a secured server, enable the check box.

When specifying a PowerOLAP server that uses a different port number CLICK THIS link

Note: When specifying a PowerOLAP® Server that uses a different port number refer to the topic Connecting to SCP running on the same machine as the IDS Web.

Note: In PowerOLAP Server, if the option is on to enable the Secure Socket Layer, the Secure Connection box must be checked (boxed in the image below).

6.   Click Refresh, the dialog box will give a list of databases that are available on the server specified.

7.   Click on the drop-down box and choose a database (e.g UsingPO Canada).

Note: If the database is secure using PowerOLAP security, the user must specify a username and password.

8.   Click Refresh, which will give a list of all the Cubes that exist in that remote database.

Note: All these queries are being made via HTTP.

9.   Select the desired Cube (e.g. Canada to US Exchange Rate) to import. The image below shows a completed Configuration Screen.

10. Click Finish.

A message box will prompt the screen indicating that the New Internet Data Service Cube is created.

11. Click OK.

A new task will appear on the Internet Data Services dialog box. This new task enables the updating of all data from the remote database to the local database.

12. Click Done.
A new Cube will be created in the PowerOLAP database currently opened in the local machine. By default, the Cube and its Meta Data are created.

To check the result of the cube that has been created, make a new slice from the new Cube; the default Slice is shown below:

Currently, the Cube will have no data, because when a Cube is created via IDS, the M Metadata is the only structure that is created.
