Create a Transfer Cube Task

The succeeding steps would illustrate how to define a simple Cube transfer task. In this exercise, a new member called Budget New is added to the Actual VS Budget dimension. The idea is to "transfer" the data coming from the Budget member to the newly created member Budget New.

NOTE: For this example, make sure that there are Budget data or figures on your Future Year Model cube.

So to begin, we need to first add the Budget New member in the Actual VS Budget dimension as shown in the succeeding image. Make sure that there are existing data in the source cube which in this case is the Budget cube. Once the member is added, proceed to creating the Transfer cube task.

To create a New Cube Transfer:

1.   From the PowerOLAP ribbon, go to Data tab, then in the Data Transfer control group select Transfer Cube icon or Transfer Data command.
The Transfer Cube Tasks dialog box is displayed.

As previously mentioned, this is where users can create and define Cube transfer tasks.

2.   To create a new cube transfer task, click Add.
The Select Source and Destination dialog box is displayed.

As indicated in the dialog, users have the option to either transfer data from within a single cube or transfer data from one cube to another. In our sample exercise, the objective is to transfer the Budget data of the Future Year Model cube into the Budget New member within the same cube.

3.   Specify a <name> to define the transfer cube task (e.g., From Budget to Budget New).

4.   Specify the Source and Destination Cube using the drop-down button.
Since for this exercise, we want to transfer data from within the same cube, simply select Future Year Model.

The image below shows the configuration made for the Transfer cube Task.

5.   Click Next.
The Transfer Options dialog box is displayed.

In this dialog box is where a user can configure additional settings desired for a certain transfer cube task. What follows are the different options that are available in this dialog and a brief description of what each option does.

OPERATION settings

DATA RANGE settings

Data Range options determine what type of performance optimizations and additional values that may be received from data source.

6.   Enable the settings desired for the transfer cube task. For this example, the default settings are left enabled.

7.   Click Next.
The Limit Source Cube dialog box is displayed.

Notes

The Limit Source Cube allows user to limit the source region. Within Transfer Cube the source can only consist of a single Member along each Dimension, allowing transfer of data from a single source Member to multiple destination Members but not transfer from multiple source Members to multiple destination Members.

8.   Select a <Dimension> and a <Member> from where the data is going to come from. For this example, go to Dimensions list box and select Actual VS Budget and select the Budget member by ticking the appropriate check box.

Notice that now, the Selected radio button is enabled. For the rest of the dimensions, we want to transfer data coming from all the members so leave All selected.

9.   Click Next.
The Destination Members dialog box is displayed.

In this dialog is where the destination member dimension is specified, meaning this will be the destination of the data to be transferred. Destination member dimension can be a single or multiple Members.

User may select a subset to copy data into using the Subset tab or a Data Point or element from Cube to copy into using the Data Point tab (both tabs are located on the right-hand pane of the dialog).

10. Select a destination Dimension and Member.
For this example, select Actual VS Budget dimension then pick Budget New as destination member.

11. Click Next.
The Summary dialog box will be displayed as shown below:

This will show you a summary of the options that had been configured for the transfer cube task. If you want to make changes simply click on Back button.

12. Click Finish.
A Transfer Cube task is now created and the task name will appear in the Transfer Cube Tasks dialog box.

13. To process task, simply click the Execute button.
A prompt indicating that the task was successfully completed will appear.

14. Click OK button.

15. Back in the Transfer Cube Tasks dialog, click Done to return to main interface.

If you try to create a slice out of the Future Year Model cube and configure slice to show Budget New data, you should now be able to see some figures in there.

Important

The task is saved within the PowerOLAP database and can be scheduled via the PowerOLAP® Scheduler. It could also be manually executed (internal to PowerOLAP®) by clicking the Execute button. The Clear Cube Tasks dialog box also provides facility to edit and delete any defined task
