Creating the Remote Database and Cubes

Notes

In order to follow through the exercise, we first need to create the remote database where it will contain the Cubes that we will eventually copy into our local database. Afterwards, we need to open the created database in the PowerOLAP® Server.

Create the Remote Database

First let us save a copy of the UsingPO.olp database from the PowerOLAP\examples directory and rename it as UsingPO Canada.olp.

Create the remote database as follows:

1.   Launch UsingPO.olp in PowerOLAP.

2.   From the PowerOLAP ribbon, go to Home tab and in the Edit control group select Rename Database command.
This will display the Rename Database dialog box.

3.   In the New Database Name text box, type the new database name (i.e., UsingPO Canada) then click OK.

4.   Save the database.

When you look inside the UsingPO Canada.olp, you will notice that there are already existing Dimensions, Cubes and Slices. Delete all the Cubes and Slices and the Regions dimension but leave the rest of the Dimensions since we will need them to create our new Cubes. If you access the Dimensions dialog box, you will see that the Accounts, Actual VS Budget and Months dimensions are available with their corresponding Dimension members. Add another Dimension and name it as Canada to US Xchange Measure that includes a Rate dimension member.

Create the Remote Cube

Next, we need to create the cubes Canada to US Exchange Rate and Future Year Canada.

To create the Canada to US Exchange Rate cube:

1.   From the PowerOLAP ribbon, go to Model tab and select the Cubes command. The Cubes dialog box will appear.

2.   Type Canada to US Exchange Rate in the Cubes text box then click Add.

3.   From the Dimensions list box of the succeeding dialog, hold Ctrl key then select Canada to US Xchange Measure and Months dimensions then click the Add member button (boxed in the image below) . The selected Dimensions will move to the right-hand pane of the dialog box.

4.   Click OK.

5.   Back in the Cubes dialog box click OK.

6.   Create a new Slice then populate your Slice by copying the values in the image below:

7.   Save the Slice.

This completes the creation of our first remote cube.

To create the Future Year Canada cube:

1.   From the PowerOLAP ribbon, go to Model tab and select the Cubes command. The Cubes dialog box will appear.

2.   Type Future Year Canada in the Cubes text box then click Add.

3.   From the Dimensions list box of the succeeding dialog, hold Ctrl key then select Actual VS Budget, Accounts and Months dimensions then click the Add member button (boxed in the image below). The selected Dimensions will move to the right-hand pane of the dialog box.

Re-arrange the dimensions as follows:

4.   Click OK.

5.   Back in the Cubes dialog box click OK.

6.   Create a new Slice then populate your slice by copying the values in the image below:

7.   Save the Slice.

After creating the Cubes, Slices and populating the Slices with fact data, save the UsingPO Canada.olp then close the database. The UsingPO Canada.olp will serve as the remote database containing all the remote Cubes that we will need to access for the exercises in the succeeding topics.

Important

In order for you to be able to access a remote database and their corresponding Cubes, that database must be running in your PowerOLAP® Server. (For the succeeding exercises open the UsingPO Canada.olp in a PowerOLAP® Server).

You must also save a copy of the UsingPO.olp in your local machine which will serve as your local database where the remote cubes will be pulled into.
