OLAP VS OLTP

by | Feb 25, 2013 | Business Intelligence (BI), Learning Center, OLAP

The two most promising Business Intelligence (BI) technologies are: OLTP (Online Transaction Processing) and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing). Despite falling in the same category of Business Intelligence tools, they are considerably different from the other. While OLTP is generalized by a large number of short online transactions, OLAP involves relatively fewer transactions. Online Transaction Processing systems focus on putting very fast query processing, maintaining data integrity in multi-access environments. Their performance is measured by the number of transactions per second. Online Analytical Processing on the other hand, involves queries that are often very complex and include aggregations. For OLAP systems a response time is a vital performance indicator. OLAP VS OLTP
